INSURANCE

–All our vehicles comes with free Third Party Liability Insurance as it is Mandatory by law in Belize and don’t let them trick you that their Insurance is free. Every car rental in Belize also sells (CDW) Collision Damage Waiver.

–How this insurance works here in Belize is that if you damage someone else’s property our Insurance will cover the damage made to the other party and our Insurance has the highest limits in the event something happens. This insurance will not cover damage made to our vehicle if you caused the accident /damage. If the other party caused the damages to our vehicle their insurance is supposed to cover damage to our vehicle.

–What we sell is Collision Insurance of US$15.00 /day with a deductible of (US$1,000.00) that is where our Insurance comes in because in the event that an accident occurs, customers will be paying the deductible in part or in whole base on the extent of the damages. If a third party has claimed responsibility for the accident, our client will be reimburse after insurance claims are made final and paid.

Purchasing Insurance on Rental less than 3days is mandatory(deposit will then be $1000).Customers declining iNsurance must sign a CDW Waiver Form and are 100% fully responsible for ALL COSTS, DOWNTIME AND ANY OTHER EXPENSES ARISING IN CONNECTION WITH ANY LOSS, THEFT, DAMAGE TO OR DESTRUCTION OF THE VEHICLE. Personal Automobile Insurance is invalid outside of the USA.
“Coverage is determined by the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the Policies applicable to your Card and is subject to change with notice. Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance is an excess insurance plan and will reimburse the Card Member only for losses/expenses not covered by other plans and when the Card Member uses their Card to reserve and pay for the entire vehicle rental. Coverage applies for the first 30 days of a vehicle rental and when rented from a Car Rental Company. This coverage provides collision damage to the rented vehicle but does not cover such things as damages to other vehicles or property, or injury to other persons. This policy does not cover some vehicles, e.g. full-sized sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles and expensive and/or exotic cars as described in the Terms and Conditions. Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered. To be eligible for claim payment, your account must be in good standing on the eligible card that maintains the original charge.”

Do I decline or take the rental insurance? This is a Major choice:

If you are renting a car in the USA and have your own personal automobile insurance then yes, definitely you can decline the insurance because your personal automobile insurance policy is your primary coverage provider and your credit card will be the secondary.

  1. When traveling and renting outside the USA your credit card is your primary coverage provider. There are various stipulations and limitations in effect when renting outside the U.S.A. on your credit card insurance policy.
  2. There are literally thousands of different credit card issuing companies, each having their own variations in respect to their car rental insurance policy coverage’s if provided at all. One of the most common problems experienced outside the U.S. is that majority of the credit card companies will only extend coverage to you if you are traveling on a pave or hard surface road. Unfortunately, most of the tourist destinations such as the Mayan sites, cave tubing, the mountain pine ridge reserve, zip lining, bird watching at the Crooked Tree Wild Life Sanctuary are all on dirt roads. Please verify with your credit card company if you are covered on a dirt/gravel road.
  3. Please be aware also that declining insurance in Belize can be risky and you could become liable for the balance of what the credit card would not pay. A lot of credit card companies will only pay the US manufactures list price or current book value in the USA but will not take care of the import duties and taxes which possibly can leave you liable for up to 60-70% of the claim being denied by the credit card company. Again, each credit card is different; so it would be best to email your credit card provider and inform them that you’re travelling to Belize and you’ll be travelling on dirt/gravel roads and want to know if you have coverage. Also, ask them what their policy is in the event of a claim. Will they pay the import duty and taxes on the rental vehicle?

Deposits:

Expect higher deposits than the US. Again, due to the fact that vehicles cost almost double than in the US and the limited parts availability in Belize makes security/deductible deposits run between US$500.00 – US$1,500.00 which is normally based on the actual cash value of the vehicle. Normally when an authorization is taken for a deposit, the credit card company will hold these funds which can be held from 7 days up to 2 weeks before it is automatically released, again depending on the credit card companies.

Insurance will not pay for a damaged windshield unless it was damaged in a collision with another vehicle, thus making you responsible.

*IMPORTANT* DRIVING IN BELIZE: on an added note, driving in Belize is like driving anywhere else in the world except for one thing. When making a left hand turn any approaching vehicle or any vehicle immediately behind you has the right away. You must pull over to the extreme right hand side of the road and let both lanes of traffic clear before turning left.
